Chievo Verona of Italy midfielder, Joel Chukwuma Obi has returned to his club from international duty to discover that the team have been hit with a severe hammer by the Serie A organising committee.
Obi learnt on arrival back in Italy, after joining the Super Eagles’ camp for matches against Seychelles and Liberia, that The Flying Donkeys are now on minus two points after the club was found guilty of accounting irregularities.
Obi’s Verona-based club were docked three points, fined 200,000 euros and their president, Luca Campedelli banned for three months.
The former Inter Milan, AC Parma and AS Torino star’s new club were found to have inflated the value of some transfer dealings with Cesena, who are now in Serie D.
The case against Cesena was dropped after the club went bankrupt during the summer, but Chievo had one point from their three games and are bottom of the table.
“The two clubs were referred for approving variations in the registration of some players, indicating a payment higher,” Italy’s football federation stated.
