Lille Shocks Real Madrid, End 36-Game Unbeaten Streak

Date:

Lille pulled off a stunning upset on Wednesday night, defeating defending champions Real Madrid 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League.

Jonathan David scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot, marking a memorable victory for the French side.

The match took place at a vibrant Stade Pierre-Mauroy, where Lille’s well-organized defense frustrated the 15-time European champions, who had been unbeaten in all competitions this season.

Real Madrid, missing star forward Kylian Mbappe due to injury, started Brazilian teenager Endrick, who had an impressive solo run but failed to convert his chances.

Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier was tested early, making a double save against David in the 25th minute. However, he could do nothing to stop David just before halftime.

After a review, it was confirmed that Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga had handled a free-kick taken by Edon Zhegrova, leading to the penalty.

In the second half, Madrid struggled to respond. Endrick received a yellow card for a reckless challenge, and Lille’s Zhegrova came close to doubling the lead with a shot that curled just wide.

As the game wore on, Carlo Ancelotti brought on Mbappe in hopes of a late comeback, but the star forward was unable to find the net.

Madrid finally threatened in the closing minutes, but Chevalier’s heroics denied attempts from Jude Bellingham, Antonio Rudiger, and substitute Arda Guler.

With this loss, Real Madrid faces a challenging schedule ahead, including matches against last season’s finalists Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Liverpool, and Atalanta.
