Cristiano Ronaldo has been the subject to a lot of bad publicity after his decision to snub the UEFA awards then followed by outbursts from both his agent, Jorge Mendes, and his sister.
The Croatian had a stunning season as he helped guide Real Madrid to Champions League glory and Croatia to the World Cup final though some believe Ronaldo should have been given the prize after netting 15 times as Los Blancos lifted the European Cup.
His success led him to winning the UEFA’s Player of the Year last Thursday.
But it was Cristiano Ronaldo’s no-show in Monaco that was the biggest talking point on the night.
It was reported the day after that Ronaldo decided against attending as he knew he was not going to win the award.
Massimiliano Allegri confirmed that Ronaldo was ‘angry’ after not winning the award and that it was his decision to not travel to Monaco.
One man who has kept quiet in this saga is Modric. But he has now had his say.
Speaking after his Croatia side drew 1-1 with Portugal, the 32-year-old revealed that Ronaldo sent him a truly classy message after he won the award.
“Cristiano Ronaldo sent me a message to congratulate me on winning the UEFA Best Player Award. He told me he was happy for me and that I deserved it and he wants to see me soon.” Despite some reports, there is no bad blood between the two and Ronaldo himself sent a personal message to his former teammate.
Luka Modric reiterated the fact that both he and Ronaldo maintain a good relationship while emphasizing the importance of the collective awards.
“As I said, we have a good relationship, no matter what people say. What matters is that he sent me a message after winning…For me, individual prizes are important, but not as important as collectives.”
He also said he is happy to make the shortlist for FIFA “The Best” award. The players and coaches decide, so we will see.” FIFA will hold “The Best” award gala on September 24th.
However, two things we would be looking forward to will be whether Ronaldo will make an appearance and how he reacts if Luka Modric ends up winning again.
Truth is, Ronaldo may not have covered himself in glory for failing to turn up to the awards, but he’s showed what sort of man he is with that text.
For this, we salute Cristiano Ronaldo for the fair play, that message was pure class as he did not have to send that at all.
On a mischievous note, do you think Ronaldo will attend FIFA “The Best” award gala?
