Old Trafford rebuild begins as Ruben Amorim lands first signing – but Rashford, Sancho, and even Garnacho could be sacrificed.
Manchester United have officially confirmed the signing of Brazilian forward, Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, in a £62.5 million ($83.5m) deal.
The club announced the agreement on Sunday, stating that the move is subject to visa approval and final registration processes.
The deal sees United trigger the release clause in Cunha’s contract at Molineux, bringing one of Wolves’ standout performers of the 2024/25 season to Old Trafford.
The 25-year-old forward is understood to have signed a five-year contract, with an option to extend for an additional season.
Why Matheus Cunha?
Cunha was a revelation for Wolves last season, scoring 17 goals and providing six assists in all competitions, as Gary O’Neil’s side comfortably avoided relegation and even flirted with European qualification.
A lethal attacker, versatile, explosive, and technically sharp, Cunha’s arrival is expected to inject new life into United’s faltering front line, especially as the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing domestic campaign.
United’s Payment Plan: Two-Year Structure
According to reports, United initially attempted to negotiate a longer payment structure—hoping to spread the fee over four or five years. However, Wolves held firm, forcing United to agree to a two-year payment plan for the full £62.5m.
Ruben Amorim’s First Major Signing
Matheus Cunha is the first major signing under newly appointed head coach Ruben Amorim, and a clear sign that the Manchester United hierarchy is putting financial muscle behind their new managerial vision.
Amorim, who joined United after a successful spell at Sporting CP, is expected to oversee a major squad overhaul this summer and Cunha’s arrival is just the beginning.
Rashford, Sancho, Antony in Danger
While United celebrate the Brazilian’s arrival, major changes could be looming at Old Trafford. The club is looking to offload Antony, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho in the coming weeks, as part of an aggressive reshuffle of attacking options.
Alejandro Garnacho, one of United’s academy young stars, could also be on the move, despite playing a key role last season. Sources suggest the Argentine winger is “likely to leave”, either on loan or via a big-money sale, depending on offers received.
Saudi Move for Bruno Fernandes?
Adding to the uncertainty, Al Hilal, one of the Saudi Pro League’s top clubs, is reportedly targeting Bruno Fernandes.
The Middle Eastern giants are keen to make the Portuguese playmaker a marquee signing ahead of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup.
While Fernandes remains team’s favorite and captain, United may be tempted to cash in if a substantial offer arrives, especially with financial fair play pressures and Amorim’s desire to build a new-look midfield.
Cunha’s signing is just the start as Manchester United is expected to announce more additions in the coming weeks, with Amorim eyeing reinforcements in midfield and defense as well, with key players potentially departing for fresh talent to come in.
