Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca has defended midfielder Enzo Fernández after a video surfaced showing the player chanting offensive songs about French players.
Maresca insists that Fernández had “no bad intentions” and believes team spirit remains intact at Stamford Bridge.
Enzo Fernández celebrated Argentina’s Copa América victory by posting a video of the team singing a racist and homophobic song targeting the heritage of some French players. The midfielder, currently on holiday, has since apologised for his actions.
Chelsea, however, has initiated an internal disciplinary process and released a statement acknowledging Fernández’s apology.
“Starting from the point that there were no bad intentions, it is quite easy for me,” Maresca said. “The player has already apologized, and the club did the same. They are all young with good intentions. Good guy, good person, good human being. There was not any bad intention.”
Maresca addressed concerns about the impact on team spirit: “I don’t think so, to be honest. Probably it is the immediate reaction. But all in all, I don’t think so. The situation is quite clear. He has already apologized, the club did the same.”
Chelsea is currently in the United States preparing for their first match of a five-game tour against Wrexham. Fernández is expected to join the team on Monday.
