Morocco, one of Africa’s football powerhouses, defeated Argentina 2-1 in a dramatic Olympic football opener.
The match was surrounded by controversy, as Argentina’s 106th-minute equalizer was disallowed more than two hours after the goal was scored, leaving the Albiceleste facing a tough path to avoid a third straight group-stage elimination at the Games.
Morocco led 2-0 before Carlos Soler set up an opportunity, delivering a driven cross that Giovanni Simeone converted at the back post.
The Atlas Lions appeared to have secured a historic victory, but in the dying moments, Cristian Medina headed the ball into the net from close range after Argentina hit the bar twice.
The goal was initially counted, but Morocco’s fans ran onto the field protesting, believing it should have been disallowed for a foul.
The match was delayed as a result of the disorder, and the final moments were played behind closed doors.
Referee Glenn Nyberg ultimately confirmed that Medina’s goal would not stand due to an offside infringement.
Argentina, two-time winners of the Olympic men’s football tournament, will now face Iraq on Saturday, while Morocco will play against Ukraine later that day.
