Nelson Abiam, a defender for Doma United, has expressed concerns over the insufficient pay and lack of structure in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), which he cites as primary reasons for many players leaving the country in search of better opportunities.
In a chat with Brila Media about the difficulties faced by NPFL players, Abiam emphasized that the long travel distances for matches pose significant challenges.
“The distance from one place to another to play games. Imagine going for 16 hours and your legs are bent, without being able to straighten them,” he explained, highlighting the physical toll these journeys take on players.
Abiam, who scored five goals for Doma United last season despite their relegation, stressed that the talent within the league is immense. However, the inadequate welfare provisions hinder the players’ performance and development.
“The talent is there in the country, players are good but welfare is not top notch compared to other professionals in other leagues. I believe if that aspect is taken care of, the best legs will not be seeking teams in other countries,” he said.
His remarks underscore the need for improved welfare and structural reforms within the NPFL to retain talented players and enhance the league’s overall quality.
