Neymar Faces Backlash for Missing Santos’ Semifinal Loss Amid Carnival Appearance

Date:

Brazilian superstar, Neymar is at the center of controversy after missing Santos’ 2-1 semifinal loss to Corinthians in the São Paulo state championship on Sunday.

The 33-year-old forward, who remained on the bench for the entire match, later cited a minor thigh injury as the reason for his absence.

However, his explanation has been met with skepticism, particularly because he was spotted at Rio de Janeiro’s famous Carnival just days before the crucial clash.

Neymar’s Absence Sparks Debate

Neymar, who recently returned to Santos after spells at Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Al Hilal, claimed on Instagram that he had experienced discomfort in his thigh since last Thursday.

“All I wanted was to be on the pitch and help my teammates in some way, but I felt discomfort that prevented me from playing,” he wrote.

Despite his claims, Santos never publicly disclosed any injury concerns before the match, raising questions about the true extent of his condition. Critics argue that his Carnival outing on March 2, just hours after he was substituted in a league match, contradicts his commitment to the club.

Popular Brazilian pundit Walter Casagrande Jr. was among the harshest critics, accusing Neymar of prioritizing personal enjoyment over his professional duties.

“He chose Carnival over the semifinal,” Casagrande stated. “His behavior in the last five, six years has not changed. He switches the professional side for pleasure and fun.”

Santos Defends Neymar

Santos president Marcelo Teixeira defended the player, insisting that multiple medical evaluations from Friday to Sunday confirmed Neymar was unfit to play.

“It was a precaution; we understood we shouldn’t risk him,” Teixeira told local media. “He is still recovering, and we need to understand that.”

Head coach Pedro Caixinha echoed similar sentiments, revealing that he personally requested Neymar remain with the team on the bench. “He has a fantastic energy. He suffered a lot for not being able to participate in the game,” Caixinha said.

Emotional Dressing Room Message

In response to the backlash, Santos released a video of Neymar addressing his teammates in tears before the match.

“It is very hard to be out in moments like this. I am trying to control myself, not show the sadness I am feeling,” Neymar said.

“If you can, run for me. I wish I could be with you, running for each of you. You don’t know how desperate I am in my heart.”

Neymar’s Future with Santos and Brazil

Despite the criticism, Neymar has been in good form for Santos, registering three goals and three assists in seven matches since his return.

His performances have also convinced Brazil’s national team coach Dorival Júnior to recall him for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina later this month.

Santos, who were promoted back to Brazil’s top division after their historic relegation in 2023, will now shift focus to their Brasileirão opener against Vasco da Gama on March 29, where Neymar is expected to return to action.
