Nigerian Duo Help Fulham to a Win at Old Trafford

Date:

A scintillating Saturday of premier league at the Old Trafford stadium as Fulham went against Manchester United. A day to shine for Nigeria as both Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey showed that they were back and loaded for their clubside.

Both teams went sized each other up in the first 45, 8 shots each and nothing to separate them at the interval.

The second half started with Manchester United hungry to lay down a marker and get past their opposition. The london based side held on and put on a defensively solid show and were rewarded in the 65th minute.

A corner sent in by Andreas Pereira, and Calvin Bassey had two bites at the cherry before getting his strike beyond Andre Onana, after 20 minutes in the second half.

With time slowly drawing away and desperation imcreasing on the red devil’s side, United got an equaliser in the 89th minutes, courtesy of Harry Maguire who tapped in a Bruno Fernandes cross at the back post.

Manchester United kept on pushing for a winner in the 9 minutes of stoppages that was added, and they were left susceptible at the back as they committed bodies to attack.

Fulham had a counter attacking opportunity late in the game, one that was scoffed wide by Rodrugo Muñiz. A second counter attack came to life with Adama Traore running beyond the United defence and laying down a pass for Alex Iwobi, the Nigerian calmly controlled the ball before beating Onana at this near post in the 97th minute.

Fulham have now claimed an away victory for only the second time this season, after the opening day of the season. The Cottagers have now collected 32 points in 26 games, they sit 12th on the log.

Manchester United had a winning start to 2024, a run which lasted 7 games and has now been snapped by Fulham. They sit 6th with 44 points, with hopes of European football still on the cards for the red side of Manchester.
