The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has decided to award three points and three goals to Rangers following the abandonment of the oriental derby against Enyimba. The decision came after Enyimba players walked off the pitch in stoppage time, protesting a penalty awarded to Rangers. Subsequently, Enyimba fans invaded the pitch, escalating the situation further.
In light of these events, the NPFL has imposed a fine of N10 million on Enyimba for the unruly conduct exhibited by their players, officials, and supporters during the match. The governing body emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable and contravenes the league’s regulations.
Rangers have also been fined N5 million for several infractions, including the failure to provide adequate security, allowing unauthorized individuals to encroach on the pitch, and exceeding stadium capacity through ticket sales. These measures highlight the league’s commitment to maintaining order and safety during matches.
Both clubs have been given 48 hours to appeal the NPFL’s decision.
This ruling has significant implications for the league standings, as Rangers now remain firmly in contention for the 2023/24 NPFL title. With the awarded points, the Flying Antelopes top the standings with 64 points from 35 games, positioning them favorably for the championship.
