Nwakali Joins Barnsley

Date:

Barnsley have made a significant addition to their squad with the signing of Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali on a three-year deal. The 26-year-old arrives at Oakwell from Chaves, a club in Portugal’s second tier, where he impressed with one goal and four assists last season. The fee for the transfer has not been disclosed.

Nwakali is eager to contribute to Barnsley and is excited about the prospect of making Oakwell his home. “I knew this was an exciting opportunity for me, and I know I can bring a lot to the team,” he said. “I am looking forward to being back in England and making Oakwell my home for the next three years.”

The midfielder’s career began in Nigeria before he moved to Arsenal in 2016. After several loan spells with various clubs, including SD Huesca and Ponferradina in Spain, he joined Chaves last year. Nwakali has also made four senior appearances for the Nigerian national team.

Barnsley’s sporting director, Mladen Sormaz, is enthusiastic about Nwakali’s potential impact. “There is no doubt Kelechi is a really talented player who can offer Darrell Clarke something different,” Sormaz stated.

The Tykes started their 2024-25 League One campaign with a 2-1 defeat at home to Mansfield Town. With Nwakali now in the fold, Barnsley will hope his addition can provide the creativity and drive needed to improve their fortunes this season.
