New arrival at MVV Maastricht of Holland, Kelechi Nwakali took the deal in preference to a loan extension at another Dutch club, VV Van Venlo.
Rather than continue at Venlo, the Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning captain opted out of a loan extension with the team, as he had lost his regular position in the squad for recent matches.
Instead of accepting an offer of a loan extension at Venlo, Nwakali opted to move to MVVV in the lower division.
Nwakali led the 2015 set of Nigeria U17 Eaglets to win the World Championship in Chile and, soon after, he was snapped up by Arsenal, who sent him out on loan to Maastricht.
Nwakali’s switch to lower league side Maastricht, stunned many, who felt returning to the club he once featured for appears something close to one going down, but the CEO of ASJ Football Academy, Emeka Amajiriaku throws more light on the matter.
“Kelechi was on loan at Venlo from Arsenal. It was a six-month loan and when the six months ran out, Kelechi had to move.
“He had opportunity to extend his Venlo stay for yet another six months but he said no. He had been at Maastricht before so he knows the club, the environment,” Amajiriaku added.
