The Ogun State Football Association has taken decisive action following an incident of assault on match officials during a Nigeria National League (NNL) match at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta on Saturday.
The association has placed a two-year ban on Mr. Joseph Jamiu Makinde, popularly known as JAMAK, and Mr. Ajani Rasaq Opadiran, also known as “Gbeke,” for their involvement in assaulting match officials after the game between Gateway United Football Club and Ikorodu City ended in a goalless draw.
The Ogun State FA has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as “barbaric, uncalled for, and irresponsible.” The association expressed its dismay over the show of shame witnessed at the sports venue and emphasized the need to maintain respect and fair play in football.
According to reports, Ajani Rasaq Opadiran (Gbeke) instigated the assault on the Centre referee, with Jamiu Makinde (JAMAK) joining in the violent act, thereby tarnishing the image of the game.
Prompt intervention by security operatives provided by the Ogun State Football Association prevented further escalation of the situation and ensured the safety of all involved.
Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi, the Chairman of Ogun State Football Association and an Executive Board Member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), disclosed that an investigation has been conducted into the incident. Findings revealed that “Gbeke” orchestrated the attack with the assistance of his accomplice.
As a result, both individuals have been banned from attending any match venues across Ogun State for the next two years. A comprehensive report detailing the incident will also be submitted to the Police Headquarters to highlight their potential threat at sports venues.
While Mr. Opadiran (Gbeke) has been arrested, Mr. Jamiu Makinde is currently evading arrest.
Furthermore, the Ogun State FA has issued a warning to football teams within the state, advising them not to associate with either individual for the duration of the ban.
