Okunowo Calls for Support for Interim Coach

Date:

Former Nigerian international, Gbenga Okunowo has called for support for Finidi George.  The current Enyimba coach is taking an interim role with the super eagles, and has already led the team to a 2-1 victory in a friendly against Ghana.

Okunowo said people don’t believe in Nigerian coaches and Finidi requires support to excel in the role. The 45 year old added that Finidi has the experience to succeed in the head coach role, highlighting that he had played and learnt under the best coaches. He also pointed out Finidi’s success with Enyimba as another indicator to why he would be the right coach for the national team.

In his exact words, Okunowo said:

“All Nigerians need to believe in our Nigerian coaches, they don’t believe in us. Finidi needs support, anybody that’s appointed there needs support like they’ll support a white person”.

“Finidi is a great player. If he was white, they’d appreciate him a lot. You can’t stay in Europe forever, you have to come back and serve your country. Give him a chance, if he doesn’t perform well they’ll replace him. He played under great coaches and he has learnt a lot. He’s doing well in Enyimba as well in the Nigerian league. The NFF and everybody needs to support him”.
