Trabzonspor of Turkey midfielder, Eddy Ogenyi Onazi has denied reports emerging from the Super Eagles camp that he is not on speaking terms with team captain, John Mikel Obi, but insists he is not quarrelling with any player in the Nigerian team.
Speaking against the backdrop of widespread stories that he is at loggerheads with Mikel, which is said to have got to a head when he was scolded by the skipper for his laxities during Saturday’s loss to England, the former SS Lazio star said it is all rumour.
Onazi was left out of Nigeria’s squad that lost 1-0 to Czech Republic and it was said to be a form of punishment for his attitude toward Mikel, but he has now labelled reports of him having an altercation with the national captain as falsehood.
Onazi admits he has not been at his best in recent games but adds that his performance has not affected his outstanding relationship with the Tianjin TEDA of China star.
He further declared that the team must improve to stand a good chance against Croatia next Saturday, but it remains to be seen if he will be restored to the starting line-up for the team’s Russia 2018 World Cup opener.
“It’s ridiculous to read that I don’t take orders from him. He’s an outstanding individual and it hurts that this could be out there without verification.
“I relate well with Mikel, he is our captain and our leader. We all grew up together in Jos and he’s someone I have looked up to since I started my career.
“I get along with him and he has been helpful encouraging me after the criticism I received after the England game.
“We are here to do our country proud and to achieve that we must improve on our performances,” Onazi added.
