Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika has been named Club Brugge’s Player of the Month for September, despite being at the center of a red card controversy during a 1-1 draw against Royal Charleroi.
Onyedika has played a pivotal role for Club Brugge this season, both in domestic and European competitions.
In September, he started all but one match the 3-0 victory against KV Kortrijk on September 14 amassing 324 minutes over five matches.
His consistent performances earned him 31% of the fan votes, beating out teammates Hans Vanaken, Christos Tzolis, Gustaf Nilsson, and Simon Mignolet for the award.
The defensive midfielder’s red card, issued just ten minutes into the second half against Charleroi, was a major talking point.
The decision sparked debate, with even Brugge’s head coach, Ronny Deila, voicing his disagreement. “That is never a red card. Yes, he goes in hard, but not with the studs on the ankle. It wasn’t a dangerous action, and he also touched the ball,” Deila said.
Despite the red card saga, Onyedika’s performances throughout the month were enough to secure his second Player of the Month award since joining Club Brugge.
However, reports indicate that Club Brugge has decided not to appeal the sanctions imposed following Onyedika’s dismissal.
