Nigeria’s Super Falcons will battle Japan in their final group game at the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris, France on Wednesday (today).
The team needs a win to keep their hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals alive.
The Super Falcons are currently at the bottom of Group C, having lost their first two matches 1-0 to both Brazil and Spain. With no points on the board, they trail group leaders Spain, who have six points. Japan and Brazil each have three points, placing them in second and third positions, respectively.
Head coach Randy Waldrum believes in the team’s chances and that opportunity is still available to progress.
“The way the matches had gone, we still needed a result against Japan and had the chance of going through, so whether we lose or we draw, we still had the opportunity,” Waldrum said. “I think if we beat Japan depending on what happens in Canada’s group since they have got six points.”
To advance, Nigeria must not only secure three points against Japan but also aim to score multiple goals.
The Super Falcons need to be clinical in front of goal to enhance their chances of qualifying as one of the best losers in the Women’s football event.
