Rangers International narrowly defeated Oriental Derby rivals Enyimba FC in the opening match of the 042 Coal City Int’L Cup preseason tournament.
Held at ‘The Cathedral’, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, the clash between Nigeria’s two most decorated clubs took place on Thursday night in Coal City.
Agu Kenechukwu’s left-footed shot from inside the box on 51 minutes proved to be the decisive goal for the reigning NPFL champions.
Rangers coach Fidelis Ilechukwu noted that his team was fortunate to come out on top against a formidable Enyimba side.
“It was a very good game and a difficult test for my boys,” Ilechukwu said.
“We did well to contain our opponents and scored the only goal of the match, which is very important.
Enyimba showed great stuff, but we were very lucky to have won. We continue our rebuilding process leading up to the CAF Champions League, and I commend my boys for standing tall in this preseason encounter.”
Rangers will next face Sierra Leonean club F.C. Kallon on Sunday, August 4, 2024, in another night fixture at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.
