The Refereeing Development Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has taken decisive action by expelling centre referee Zaharaudeen Nasiru from officiating in the Nigeria National League (NNL). This move comes in response to Nasiru’s controversial decision during the matchday 17 fixture between Jigawa Golden Stars and Sporting Supreme.
During the encounter, Nasiru awarded a goal to Jigawa Golden Stars despite it being scored through a handball, a decision that significantly impacted the outcome of the match. Jigawa Golden Stars went on to secure a 2-1 victory over Sporting Supreme in Dutse, raising questions about the integrity and quality of refereeing in the NNL.
In an official memo addressing the incident, the Refereeing Development Committee stated, “In view of your decision taken in your Week 17 match… wherein your action brought referring and the game in Nigeria into disrepute. I am directed to notify you that you have been expelled with immediate effect from the league and referring generally.”
In addition to Nasiru’s expulsion, his assistant, Usman Auwalu, has also been removed from officiating duties in the NNL with immediate effect. The NFF’s decision to clamp down on poor officiating reflects their commitment to upholding the standards and integrity of the league, ensuring fair play and transparency.
This action serves as a reminder to all match officials of the importance of making accurate and unbiased decisions during games, as any lapses in judgment can have significant implications for the teams involved and the overall credibility of the league.
