Manchester United is on the verge of appointing Rúben Amorim as their new head coach, with the deal expected to be finalized during the November international break.
The Premier League club has reportedly reached an agreement with Portuguese champions Sporting CP for the departure of their head coach.
Rúben Amorim, who has led Sporting CP since 2020 and previously managed Braga, will replace Erik ten Hag, sacked on Monday.
United triggered Amorim’s €10 million ($10.87m) release clause and agreed to pay additional compensation to bring some of his backroom staff to Old Trafford.
He will become the sixth permanent manager at United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Due to a 30-day notice period in Amorim’s Sporting contract, he will officially take charge of United after Sporting’s away match against Braga on November 10.
Before his departure, he will lead Sporting in their upcoming home games against Estrela and Manchester City in the Champions League, his final home appearance at Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Until then, Ruud van Nistelrooy, appointed interim head coach, will continue managing United.
After guiding the team to a 5-2 Carabao Cup victory over Leicester City in his debut, van Nistelrooy is set to oversee the next three matches at Old Trafford against Chelsea, PAOK Thessaloniki, and Leicester again.
Amorim’s first game with United is expected to be the Premier League fixture against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on November 24.
Manchester United, who currently sits 14th in the Premier League with only three wins in nine games, hopes Amorim’s leadership will spark a turnaround in their season.
