Nigeria suffered a fourth quarter-final defeat in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup following Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Spain at the Stade Guy Piriou in Concarneau.
In a game of two-halves, the European side two a 2-0 first-half lead, scoring through Aitana Bonmati in the 13th minute and Patricia Guijarro netted a second on the death in additional time.
When the game resumed, Nigeria then turned the ante up, passing the ball better and pushing hard at the Spanish defence.
Finally, the pressure would pay off when a fine build up play found Rasheedat Ajibade through on goal. Although she could only draw a save from the goal keeper, it fell tantalizingly at the foot of Peace Efih – who started the move – and she buried it with aplomb.
However, the Falconets would struggle to break Spain’s defence, but in vain as the European 19 Champions held on for a first semi-final place in the tournament.
