The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has directed the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF to increase the number of its Congress members.
During a meeting on Thursday with the NFF and national team coach Finidi George, Minister Enoh emphasized the need for the federation to expand its Congress to include more stakeholders in the development of the sport.
The meeting covered several significant issues affecting football development, including the expansion of the NFF Congress.
A press statement from the Ministry of Sports read,
“Furthermore, the meeting delved into other more substantive matters said to be holding down our football development, including the expansion of the present membership of the NFF Congress, so as to make for more inclusive and greater representation.”
Before the NFF Elective Congress in 2010, the Congress comprised over 100 members but was reduced to 46 members. Out of the 46 votes, the State FAs hold 37, while the remaining nine votes are shared among the other four bodies.
The NFF consists of five statutory bodies: the Players’ Union, the Coaches’ Union, the Referees, the Clubs, and the State Football Associations (FAs).
The Sports Minister expressed hope that expanding the Congress members will lead to a more effective administration and aid football development in Nigeria.
