Super Eagles Stars Shine Ahead of Crucial World Cup Qualifiers

Date:

Nigeria’s Super Eagles players delivered outstanding performances across Europe over the weekend, providing a timely boost ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe later this month.

Osimhen and Lookman in Red-Hot Form

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen continued his excellent form for Galatasaray, netting the decisive goal in their 2-1 victory over Alanyaspor. The 25-year-old forward has now scored 17 goals and provided four assists in the league this season, reinforcing his role as Nigeria’s primary attacking threat.

Ademola Lookman was also on the scoresheet, contributing to Atalanta’s 4-0 thrashing of Juventus. The Nigerian winger has now scored four goals in his last four matches, signaling his sharp form ahead of international duty.

Other Nigerian Stars Impress

  • Umar Sadiq scored the match-winner for Valencia in their 2-1 victory over Real Valladolid.
  • Chidera Ejuke netted the only goal as Sevilla secured a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad.
  • Chrisantus Uche played the full 90 minutes in Getafe’s 2-1 upset against Atletico Madrid.
  • Wilfred Ndidi made his return to Leicester City’s starting lineup in a 1-0 loss to Chelsea.
  • Gift Orban endured a goalless outing for Hoffenheim but has four goals in eight games since his transfer.
  • Raphael Onyedika helped Club Brugge claim a 3-1 derby win over Cercle Brugge before being substituted at halftime.
  • Bruno Onyemaechi featured in Olympiakos’ 1-0 triumph over OFI Crete, keeping their Greek Super League title hopes alive.

Super Falcons Players in Action

  • Edna Imade came off the bench in Granada’s 2-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao and remains one of the top performers in Liga F with 12 goals in 20 appearances.
  • Chinyere Kalu played 70 minutes in Real Betis’ 0-0 draw against Atletico Madrid Women.
  • Rasheedat Ajibade was notably absent from Atletico Madrid’s squad.

Countdown to the World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria faces a make-or-break moment in their World Cup qualification campaign as they prepare to take on group leaders Rwanda in Kigali on March 21, followed by a crucial home fixture against Zimbabwe in Uyo on March 25.

The Super Eagles currently sit fifth in Group C with three points from four matches, and anything less than two victories could severely damage their hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With key players like Osimhen and Lookman in top form, Nigeria will look to turn their fortunes around and keep their qualification hopes alive.
