The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to take on Benin Republic in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at a neutral venue.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has deemed stadiums in Benin as sub-standard and unsuitable for hosting international matches.
Reports from Benin indicate that the country’s football association is in discussions with their Ivorian counterpart to secure a neutral venue for the match. One of the stadiums used during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast is being considered as a potential venue for the fixture.
The upcoming round of World Cup qualifiers is scheduled to take place between June 3 and 11. Prior to facing Benin Republic, the Super Eagles will host the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in another crucial encounter.
The Super Eagles currently occupy third place in their qualifying group with two points from two matches. On the other hand, Benin, led by former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr, have secured a single point in the qualifiers.
In addition to Nigeria and Benin Republic, Rwanda, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho are the other teams competing in this group. As the race for World Cup qualification heats up, both Nigeria and Benin will be eager to secure valuable points in their quest to advance to the tournament.
