President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, is confident in the Super Eagles’ potential to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite a challenging start to their qualifying campaign.
The three-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions have struggled, managing only three draws and a recent defeat against Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic.
Currently, the Super Eagles sit fifth in their qualifying group, having garnered just three points from four matches, leaving them four points adrift of South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin.
Gusau, however, with unwavering confidence, stated, “I have much confidence we will qualify for the next World Cup in 2026. I know we have a very bad start, having just three points from four matches, but if you look at the momentum now, there is a level of progress.”
“Everybody knows what is at stake, and we are surely going to do our best to support the team. We have just started our qualifiers for the next Nations Cup in Morocco 2025, and by the grace of God, that would breakthrough to our fourth AFCON title.”
Looking ahead, Augustine Eguavoen will guide the Super Eagles in their upcoming two-legged AFCON 2025 qualifier against Libya.
The first match is scheduled for Friday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, followed by the second leg next Wednesday in Libya.
