Hungary’s captain, Dominik Szoboszlai, has openly criticized the medical staff for their delayed response following a severe collision involving his teammate Barnabás Varga during Hungary’s 1-0 victory over Scotland in Stuttgart on Sunday.
The incident occurred 68 minutes into the Euro 2024 qualifier, when Varga, who suffered multiple facial fractures, collided with Scotland’s goalkeeper, Angus Gunn.
Dominik Szoboszlai, visibly distressed, was seen frantically waving for medical assistance as Varga lay motionless on the pitch. When the medical team finally arrived, Szoboszlai even grabbed the stretcher to hasten their efforts.
“I don’t understand this kind of protocol, why the medical staff don’t rush in at this time?” Szoboszlai revealed.
He added, “This question remains for everyone, so I hope that everyone can save a few seconds and save a life. I hope we will never have to experience this again … something needs to be done.”
Coach Marco Rossi later confirmed that Varga regained consciousness before being taken to the hospital, where he was reported to be in a stable condition.
The Hungarian team who scored a late goal through Kevin Csoboth in the 100th minute, securing their victory now awaits the results of other group matches to determine if they will advance as one of the four best third-place finishers.
