SV Mainz 05 of Germany striker, Anthony Ujah is set to finally gain from a chance meeting he had with Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr at Frankfurt airport in the country where he plies his trade.
Footballlive.ng recalls that the meeting between coach and player actually occurred before the World Cup in Russia but, with Ujah now on fire in the German Bundesliga, Rohr has dusted his diary and is ready to give the fearsome striker an invitation.
Rohr is Franco-German in nationality, which gives him an affinity with players based in both France and Germany, but the former Bordeaux gaffer has always insisted that anyone getting into his team would come on merit.
Consequently, the former Niger Republic, NBurkina Faso and Gabon handler is now set to give Ujah a call for the Eagles’ back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya.
The 27-year-old star, who has also seen action in Scandinavia and China, played his way into Rohr’s plans after scoring twice in three Bundesliga games this season, from just 54 minutes of action, mostly as a sub.
Ujah last played for Nigeria three years ago in a friendly game against Niger Republic, which the Eagles won 2-0 on the 8th of September 2015.
Since making his debut for Nigeria in 2013, the dark-skinned striker is yet to score in six games from 321 minutes, which he gained at the FIFA Confederation Cup in 2013, World Cup 2014 qualifiers and friendlies.
However, Ujah did everything possible to be named in the Eagles’ 2018 World Cup roster, including dumping Chinese club, Liaoning Whowin before the expiration of his contract.
The former Werder Bremen and FC Cologne striker recounted meeting Rohr at the aiport, but admits that, back then, his lack of game time was the main reason he was not invited for the World Cup.
”I met once with our national coach Gernot Rohr in Frankfurt at the airport. Unfortunately, I did not play that often in the second half of the season, so it just did not work,” Ujah disclosed.
