#WorldCup 2018 : Uruguay 1 – 0 Egypt

Date:

Egypt made their first World Cup appearance since 1990, but superstar Mohamed Salah had to watch the full 90 minutes from the bench as his teammates were defeated by a last-minute goal.

Mohamed Salah started the game on the bench as coach Hector Cuper seemingly decided not to take a risk on his star player.

In an evenly contested first half, Edinson Cavani had the first shot on target but Egypt goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shenawy saved it comfortably.

On the other side, Trezeguet managed to get Egypt’s first shot on target, although it was easily saved by Fernando Muslera.

Luis Suarez missed the biggest chance of the first half, his attempt from close range only finding the side netting.

Egypt managed to keep their shape and annoy the South American as both teams went into the half-time break scoreless.

The Pharaohs’ defence was almost broken inside the first minute of the second stanza, but El-Shenawy saved brilliantly against Suarez, who was set up by Cavani.

Egypt continued their tactically sound display in the second half, allowing Uruguay hardly any chances, but Suarez again came close in the 73rd minute, with El-Shenawy taking the ball off his feet as he tried to round the goalkeeper.

Cavani hit the post late on in the game as it looked like Egypt could hold out for a draw.
However, Jose Gimenez eventually found the opener for Uruguay, as his powerful header finally beat Egypt goalkeeper El-Shenawy.
