NFF Backs Eric Chelle to Secure Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Ticket

Date:

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Gusau, is confident in newly appointed Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, stating that his understanding of African football dynamics will be key to Nigeria’s successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Chelle, who was unveiled on Monday at a ceremony held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, signed a two-year contract with the NFF.

His tenure includes an option for a one-year extension if he secures the much-coveted World Cup ticket.

Speaking at the unveiling, Gusau said the federation is committed to fully supporting Chelle in his role. He cited historical examples of foreign coaches like Clemens Westerhof and Jo Bonfrère, whose understanding of African football helped them achieve significant success with the Super Eagles.

“Eric is here to work, and I want to assure all Nigerians that if Eric can replicate what he achieved in Mali, by the grace of God, we are going to the World Cup,” Gusau stated.

“There is no coach in the history of Nigerian football that didn’t face challenges.”

”What matters is having someone who understands African football mentality.”

”We are ready to give him all the support he needs to execute his job effectively, and I believe we will get the desired results.”

Chelle’s Record and Task Ahead

Eric Chelle, a former Malian international with five caps, brings experience from coaching stints with GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.

His most notable achievement as a coach was leading Mali to the brink of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-finals, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to eventual winners Ivory Coast after extra time.

The Super Eagles currently sit fifth in their World Cup qualifying group with three points from four games.

Chelle’s tenure begins in earnest with Nigeria’s qualifiers resuming in March.

The team will travel to Rwanda on March 17 before hosting Zimbabwe in Uyo on March 24.

High Stakes and Expectations

Chelle faces a daunting task in turning around the Super Eagles’ fortunes.

However, his familiarity with African football, coupled with the NFF’s promise of unwavering support, has raised hopes of a successful campaign.

Chelle himself has vowed to meet expectations, stating during his unveiling, “I understand the challenges ahead, and I am ready to give my best to ensure Nigeria qualifies for the World Cup.”

The Road Ahead

With the 2026 World Cup qualification process heating up, Chelle’s leadership and strategic approach will be under scrutiny and close watch as he attempts to restore the Super Eagles to their rightful place on the global stage.
