KAA Gent of Belgium summer arrival, Taiwo Awoniyi has given credit to God for the goal he scored Thursday night in the Europa League, as he admits there was divine support in his effort.
While stating delight on both personal and team levels, as his goal aided victory for his side, Awoniyi, who is on loan from Liverpool of England, revealed a spiritual message under his shirt while celebrating his feat against Jagiellonia Bialystok.
Awoniyi had spent 264 minutes on the pitch in five matches before ending his mini goal drought with a header in the 13th minute off an assist from Franko Andrijacevic.
Awoniyi’s goal against Jagiellonia was the 15th he has scored since turning professional, he previously had loan spells at Royal Excel Mouscron, FSV Franfurt and NEC Nijmegen.
Awoniyi set the tone for a 3-1 win when he opened scoring after 13 minutes and the ex-youth international, who was delighted with his effort, celebrated the goal by displaying a message that read ‘Only God Saves’ across his under vest, for which he got a yellow card.
“I’ve been looking forward to it for a long time. I am really happy, not only because of that goal, but also because of the victory.
“Only God can save you, only he decides the future of everyone, if you believe in him, he will watch over you. But of course, you cannot just sleep in your home and expect great things.”
