Former Germany captain hails Gernot Rohr

Date:

The Former Germany captain and legend, Lothar Mattaub spoke to Campsbay Media just before this weekend’s clash between Hoffenheim and Stuttgart, hailing the Franco-German for his impressive display since taking up the reins as Nigeria’s coach.

Former FIFA world player of the year has praised the executives of the Nigerian Football Federation for retaining Coach Gernot Rohr despite the Eagles’ unconvincing performance at the last FIFA World Cup, positing that with continuity the team can reach their potential as one of the best in the world, footballlive.com.ng reports.

Despite an unimpressive World Cup in Russia, Rohr has rekindled Nigeria’s chances of playing in its first AFCON in five years after back to back wins against Libya and another against Seychelles which has seen the Eagles sour to the top of Group E, needing just one point to seal qualification to next year’s AFCON in Cameroon.

Gernot Rohr knows what he has to do being a former player with Bayern, a coach-player in France and also has a lot of experience. He knows African football very well; he’s the coach for the future.

It was good he was given the opportunity to continue after the world cup because you have to believe in the coach and his job to allow him to go all the way just like Germany did with Lowe before he eventually won the world cup in 2014,” Matthaus concluded.
