Jollof Derby: Super Eagles B Clash with Ghana in CHAN Qualifiers

Date:

The stage is set for an electrifying encounter as Nigeria’s Super Eagles B prepare to face off against their West African rivals, Ghana, in the second round of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 qualifiers this December.

The draw, held at the CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, on October 9, 2024, paired the two footballing giants together, promising a heated rivalry known as the “Jollof Derby.”

The two-legged match will kick off in Ghana, with the first leg scheduled to take place between December 20 and 22. The return leg will follow in Nigeria from December 27 to 29, 2024.

Both teams look forward to secure a spot in next year’s tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Nigeria’s CHAN Eagles will be under the guidance of a coaching team led by Rangers’ Fidelis Ilechukwu and Remo Stars’ Daniel Ogunmodede, with oversight from interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen.

This encounter provides a golden opportunity for the Super Eagles B to avenge their previous defeat to Ghana, who eliminated Nigeria from the last CHAN qualifiers.

In that matchup, the Black Galaxies edged the Super Eagles B in a tense penalty shootout after the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.

This upcoming clash not only serves as a chance for revenge but also as a vital step for Nigeria as they aim to secure their place in the CHAN 2024 finals.

The Super Eagles B have previously reached the CHAN final in 2018, finishing as runners-up to Morocco, and secured third place in the 2014 edition. However, they have yet to lift the coveted CHAN trophy.

On the other hand, Ghana’s Black Galaxies will be looking to build on their recent successes, having qualified for the last edition of the tournament held in Algeria.
