Argentina legend Diego Maradona has heavily criticised the Albiceleste manager following their 1-1 draw against Iceland at the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, and has also commented on Lionel Messi’s penalty miss.
The 57-year-old, who attended his country’s stalemate with Iceland on Saturday afternoon, believes Jorge Sampaoli would not be allowed back in Argentina with his team playing so poorly.
“Playing like that, he can’t come back to Argentina,” he said, according to AFP.
“It’s a disgrace. Not having prepared for the match knowing that Iceland are all 1.90m tall… I get the feeling there’s a general anger at the heart of the team.”
Maradona refused to blame Messi for his penalty miss against Iceland, saying that he missed plenty kicks from the spot in his career.
“I don’t blame the players,” he added.
“I could blame the lack of work rate. But I can’t blame the players, much less Messi, who gave it all he had.
“I missed five penalties on the spin and I was still Diego Armando Maradona. I don’t think that they dropped two points because Messi missed a penalty.”
