Tianjin Teda of China midfielder, John Mikel Obi is ruing the bitter-sweet experience he faced at the weekend, as he moved from a goal hero for his club to a ‘villain’ who caused their opponents to net in return.
Before slumping into dismay, Mikel netted his first goal in six months, but his error saw Teda end up getting beaten 4-2 by Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Super League on Sunday, footballlive.ng reports.
Giovanni Andres Moreno scored with a header to open scoring for the visitors in the 14th minute, but Mikel equalised eight minutes later.
A free-kick taken by Li Yuanyi was punched away by goalkeeper Li Shuai and the rebound fell to Ghanaian Frank Acheampong, whose shot was directed into the net by Mikel.
The Super Eagles captain had not scored in a competitive game since finding the net against Guangzhou R&F on April 14 prior to Sunday’s effort on target at Tianjin Olympic Stadium.
However, Mikel was later was culpable for the second goal conceded by Teda, after he failed to clear the ball out of danger and an opponent took advantage to capitalize on the mistake to score.
