Leganes of Spain defender, Kenneth Omeruo has picked positives from his side’s victory over Real Madrid in Copa del Rey and says he is proud of their feat, despite not being able to move into the next round.
Footballlive.ng reports that Leganes were still ousted from the Spanish Cup competition, despite the victory, as Madrid had already won the first leg 3-1 at Santiago Bernabeu and losing the reverse fixture 1-0 did not stop them from moving into the enxt round.
Omeruo noted that his teammates gave their best, as Middlesbrough-loanee, Martin Braithwaite reduced the deficit in the 30th minute from close range at Estadio Municipal de Butarque.
Brahim Diaz had a huge chance to score his first goal in Madrid colours following his move from Manchester City in the dying moments, but Ivan Cuellar tipped his fierce shot onto the post.
Braithwaite sparked hopes of an improbable comeback against Madrid’s weakened side after a convincing win in the first leg but it meant a rare start for the out-of-favour Isco.
Real’s goalkeeper, Keylor Navas then prevented a nervy finish with a string of fine late saves from Braithwaite as Madrid progressed to the last eight of The King’s Cup.
However, Omeruo insists he and his colleagues have nothing to feel ashamed of, haven beaten one of the Iberian country’s biggest football clubs, and the Super Eagles’ star says it is a boost for better results.
Omeruo took to social media to reveal his reaction to the game, and stated delight that Leganes ruffled a lot of feathers to floor Los Blancos.
Omeruo added: “Am actually proud of myself and my team mates for tonight victory against Real Madrid.
“Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to take us to the next round, But what a game.. #vamosleganes.”
