Rivers United’s hopes of progressing in the CAF Confederation Cup were dashed as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against USM Alger, marking the end of their campaign in the tournament.
The efforts of the Nigerian side fell short against the Algerian outfit, who secured their spot in the semi-finals with a 2-1 aggregate victory.
The match saw Malian striker Abdullah Kanou make a significant impact for USM Alger, opening the scoring just eight minutes before halftime to give the hosts the lead. Rivers United’s attempted to mount a comeback but were unable to find the back of the net, with Andy Ogbai’s header rattling the crossbar in the 72nd minute.
USM Alger capitalized on their momentum, with Kanou finding the net once again in the 74th minute to seal the win and secure his side’s place in the semi-finals of the competition.
Looking ahead, USM Alger will now face Moroccan club Berkane in the semi-finals later this month, as they continue their quest for continental glory.
