Troost-Ekong: Group D Rivals Are Big On Paper

Date:

Bursaspor of Turkey defender, William Troost-Ekong has added another angle to his expectations of a surge into the second round of the 2018 World Cup for Nigeria, as he reckons that the Super Eagles’ group rivals are merely loaded with big name players on paper.

Heading into the Eagles’ opening game of Russia 2018 against Croatia in Kaliningrad this Saturday, Troost-Ekong said it is performance on the [pitch that would make a difference, not names on paper.

He stressed that the Nigerian team will do well, because playing at the World Cup is a huge lifetime chance and they all hope to make the most of it.

With that in mind, Troost-Ekong said he believes the Eagles can upset World Cup Group D favourites Argentina and Croatia to reach the knockout rounds of the tournament.

“We’re in one of the toughest groups and Argentina and Croatia by the names they have and on paper will be the favourites. I believe we have a good chance even if not on paper.

“Maybe some of these teams will underestimate us, that may work in our favour as we could surprise them. We have already done this before.

“To play at the World Cup is a lifetime opportunity, if you are lucky; you get to do it again. So, we will give it our best and enjoy it as much as we can,” Troost-Ekong said.
