Super Eagles captain and defender, William Troost-Ekong, has finally revealed the reason behind his move to the Saudi Pro League, joining Al Khalood.
During the transfer window, the Nigerian international made the switch from Greek club PAOK Salonika to Al Khalood, having only been with PAOK for a year, where he also won the league title.
Speaking on the podcast ‘Counter Attack’, Ekong revealed that his decision to move was part of his long-term planning.
“I got an offer I couldn’t turn down; I’m 31 now, and I have to think about the big picture,” Ekong explained.
“I think the Saudi League is competitive; you see, the names that were playing there in my first game were Benzema, Kante, Fabinho, etc, players that are at the world level.
But at the same time, everybody talks about the opportunity you have there to guarantee your future to think about my family”
At 31, Ekong remains a formidable presence in defense for the Super Eagles. His leadership was notably felt in June when he was absent from the squad.
He returned to play a crucial role in Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Benin and the goalless draw against Rwanda, having his usual strong performance.
