Awoniyi Braces Up To Battle Sporting Charleroi

Date:

KAA Gent of Belgium striker, Taiwo Awoniyi will have to ward off any level of fatigue he might have picked up from appearing with his club’s under-23 team, as he will have to star for the main squad against Victor Osimhen’s Charleroi on Friday.

Footballlive.ng learnt that Awoniyi was drafted to Gent’s under-23 side for a tune-up game that was meant to put many of the first team players under check, as their new coach is trying out fresh ideas for the squad.

After coming through the under-23 game unscathed, Awoniyi will head back into the main squad for Friday’s match against visiting Charleroi, who are flying high, courtesy an amazing run of goals from Osimhen, their summer loan signing from VfL Wolfsburg of Germany.

Gent, who are sixth on the Belgian Jupiler League table with 17 points from 11 matches, are undergoing a massive re-organisation following the recent appointment of a Danish coach, Jess Thorup.

Awoniyi and compatriot Philip Azango both featured for the under-23s in a 1-1 draw at Lokeren, yet they both hope to keep their places in the main team, as it has been from the start of this season.

Awoniyi has nine league appearances and was a late substitute last weekend when Gent thrashed hosts Ostende 4-0, but Azango’s only game was last month away to Sint-Truiden.
